When Paul Simon released Graceland in 1986, no one — not even Simon himself — could have predicted the seismic cultural and political shockwaves it would send across the globe. Blending American folk rock with South African township music, mbaqanga, zydeco, and even Tex-Mex influences, Graceland became one of the most celebrated and controversial albums of the 20th century. It won the Grammy for Album of the Year (1987), sold over 16 million copies, and introduced the world to the voices of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Miriam Makeba, and Hugh Masekela.
