The Way Back is set in 1945, during the end of World War II. The story follows a group of Allied prisoners of war who escape from a Siberian gulag and embark on a perilous journey to India, which is over 6,000 miles away. The movie is based on a true story and draws inspiration from the experiences of Slovenian prisoner of war, Slavko Avsenik, who was imprisoned in a Siberian gulag and managed to escape.

The turning point of the film comes when Valery and a group of fellow inmates, including Semyon, decide to escape from the gulag. The journey is treacherous, with the group facing extreme temperatures, rugged terrain, and ruthless Soviet soldiers. As they navigate through the unforgiving landscape, they encounter various obstacles, including wild animals, harsh weather conditions, and scarce food and water.
